Why is my editor slow in this one repo

Every other repo is instant. This one takes six seconds to open a file.

It has a 40MB generated file in it. Is that enough to explain it, and if so what is the tool doing?

Worth adding that this only holds if the clock is monotonic. Ours was not, and the failure looked exactly like a slow disk.
