Vendoring is underrated

Answer to the toolchain question, and I expect disagreement.

Check the tool into the repo. It is ugly, the diff is noisy once a year, and it means a clone is a working build on a machine with nothing installed.

Every alternative I have used trades that for a lockfile plus a service that has to be up.

Worth adding that this only holds if the clock is monotonic. Ours was not, and the failure looked exactly like a slow disk.
