Measure, leading, and the return sweep

The scan has a 65-character measure and generous leading because the page was that size. The PDF has a 110-character measure because A4 is that size and nobody set a column.

What tires you is the return sweep: at 110 characters your eye loses the start of the next line often enough that you re-read. Leading buys some of it back, which is why a wide measure with tight leading is the worst combination there is.

The naming point generalises. Half our bugs are a name answering a different question than its value.

Is there a version of this that works when the window is not fixed?

Yes, but it costs a second index and I would not do it under a million rows.

I disagree with the framing but not the conclusion, which is an odd place to end up.

Small correction: it is the fifth most recent, not the fifth oldest. Took me a minute.

Fixed, thank you. That was a real error and not a typo.

Do you have a link for the second claim? I want to read the original.

Two years ago I would have argued. Having since maintained one of these, I would not.

The part people skip is the last paragraph, which is the whole argument.

Counterexample: on a read-heavy workload we measured the opposite. Happy to write it up if useful.

Reading this made me go and check ours, and ours was wrong. So: thank you, and also, ugh.
