The number I keep forgetting and re-deriving: text is 4.5:1, but a control's own edge is 3:1, and a divider between two things that are both already there is nothing at all.

So a border and a rule are different roles with different floors, and calling them both 'border' is how a design ends up with either invisible controls or a page full of lines.

Worth adding that this only holds if the clock is monotonic. Ours was not, and the failure looked exactly like a slow disk.
