Write down what you had to work out

The rule that fixed it for me: write down the things you could not look up.

Anything in the documentation is already written down. What is not written down anywhere is the twenty minutes you spent working out why the documented thing did not apply to your case. That is the note.

My notes got much shorter and I started reading them.
